What it means to lend a helping hand, with Raquel Garcia
Date
Dec 2023
Location
Seattle, Washington
Over the years, Seattle has seen the development of multiple community centers, which represent and celebrate culture across diverse groups. These cultural centers have dedicated services to provide for the community, with a ranging demographic. El Centro de la Raza is one of them. With a plethora of programs designated to help children, families, elderly, and other individuals, they have created a team to serve the community by giving them access to resources. The Senior HUB program is one of El Centro’s prominent initiatives, which is headed by Raquel Garcia. A two-decade long member of El Centro, Garcia works at the hub to facilitate food and recreational activities for elderly citizens around the city. Every day, Garcia begins her day at the hub welcoming the elderly, after which she serves food and beverages to them. According to her, the program serves as a way to provide warmth and a sense of belonging to these individuals, where they have the opportunity to connect with fellow members of the community. One of the most fulfilling parts of the job is to listen to people’s stories, Garcia says. Over time, there is a sense of familiarity that she builds with these individuals.
Along with helping in the kitchen, Garcia also conducts weekly bingos and dance classes for the elderly, where she teaches them free-flow movements beneficial to their well-being.
“It’s definitely an opportunity to connect with the community,” Garcia said. “I am committed to the values of El Centro, and I am able to be a part of the process to change our world.”
